Importing via FedEx®

FedEx® is an express courier company popular for moving packages by air from point A to point B quickly. FedEx® will collect the packages from your home or office and then do everything from that point until the packages are received at your home or office in Australia.

FedEx® in Australia, however will not do the customs clearance or quarantine clearance formalities for items known as ‘personal effects’ Personal effects are items that you have pre-owned and pre-used for the previous 12 months [prior to arrival]. FedEx® in Australia will notify you generally by email that your package/s are about to arrive or has arrived and that you now need to source an Australian customs broker.

We have on plenty of occasions been selected by importers to be that customs broker; to have the packages processed thru the Australian Border Force [ABF] and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry [DAFF].

FedEx® in Australia have two policies; 1) to charge storage after 24 hours after your nominated customs broker has been selected and notified to process your shipment and 2) to return the packages to the country that they were sent from if the packages have not been processed promptly [in a matter of days].

Types of Personal Effects That We Can Customs Clear

At Platinum® Freight Management, we can help you import the following types of personal effects:

  • Personal goods owned and used by you for the previous 12 months
  • Excess luggage that has been sent from overseas via the FedEx® network
  • New items that you have included amongst your personal effects

Personal goods owned and used by you for the previous 12 months

If you’re planning to move to Australia or you are relocating back to Australia after a short or extended time away, you will have personal goods that you have acquired whilst you were overseas. You can choose to send these goods to Australia in numerous ways, by 1) an express courier company like FedEx®, 2) a general air cargo airline or via 3) via sea freight. In order for the goods to be classified as ‘personal effects’ they must have been owned and used by you for the preceding  12 months prior to arrival. If the goods have not been owned and used by you for the preceding 12 months, the ABF will levy your goods with import duty and import GST on the goods.

Platinum® always aims to pre-clear your personal effects prior to arrival in Australia but we understand that this is not always possible.

Excess luggage that has been sent from overseas via the FedEx® network

On many occasions, we have received a telephone call or email asking ‘what will happen if I send my excess luggage back to Australia?’ or ‘we are overseas on holiday and we wish to send our ski equipment and ski clothing back to Australia.’

In both scenarios, the customer has had their owned and pre-used items collected by FedEx® and we have processed the customs and quarantine clearance as the goods are travelling to Australia.

We ask the customer to provide an inventory of the packages and to also provide the tracking numbers from Fedex®; so that we can start the pre-clearance process thru the ABF and the DAFF.

New items that you have included amongst your personal effects

There are no issues when you include new items amongst your personal effects; the only requirement is that you will need to provide a detailed list for these new items, with quantities and values so that these items can be calculated for import duty and import GST. Your personal effects will still be classified as tax-free but these new items will have an import tax assessment.
