Understanding the various Indirect Taxes when Importing
Navigating the complexities of international trade requires an understanding of [1] the Australian Border Force (ABF) customs procedures and [2] the taxes that the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requests that the ABF collect on their behalf at the time of the customs clearance. Importers need to possess a keen awareness of the various indirect taxes that may be needed to be paid at the time of importation.
At Platinum®, we are your trusted Indirect Tax Customs Brokers™, we provide unparalleled expertise in calculating and managing these indirect taxes that the ATO requires the ABF to collect at the time of importation; Platinum® ensures compliance with both the ABF and the ATO.
Indirect taxes are a critical component of any customs clearance and importers must consider these various taxes which could be required to be paid at the time of clearance, [1] import duty (payable to the Australian Border Force), [2] import GST (Goods and Services Tax payable to the ATO), [3] WET (Wine Equalisation Tax payable to the ATO), [4] LCT (Luxury Car Tax payable to the ATO) and [5] Excise tax (payable to the ATO).
Each one of these taxes can significantly affect the overall cost of importing goods to Australia, making it essential for importing businesses to understand their [1] immediate implications and to ensure of the [2] projected cash flow implications.
Import Duty is a tax levied on goods imported to Australia, the lowest rate is zero and the highest rate is 5%. Import duty is calculated on the purchase price of the goods. The tariff classification and the country of manufacture will determine the import duty rate.
Import GST is applied to the cost of the goods plus any import duty plus transport costs to Australia plus any insurance costs; this accumulated figure is the basis to charge 10% GST.
The Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) is specific to wine and is a complex calculation. WET is applied to the cost of the goods plus any import duty plus transport costs to Australia plus any insurance costs; this accumulated figure is the basis to charge 29% WET. The import GST is then charged by accumulating all of the fees and then charging 10% GST.
Luxury Car Tax (LCT) is levied on cars above a certain value threshold. Calculating this tax accurately is vital for automotive businesses to manage their costs efficiently.
Excise Tax is a tax levied on goods such as cigarettes, beer, sprits, alcohol and petroleum goods.
